It has been proven that good quality music education enhances children’s academic performances in other areas of the curriculum.  It also enables children who may be low achievers in other academic subjects to excel in a valuable creative discipline.  Performing experience gives confidence and creativity broadens and stimulates the imagination making children healthier and happier.

Michael Gove, education secretary, stated, “All young people should have the chance to learn an instrument, read music and receive top quality music education”.  While I am at your school I will also offer low cost instrumental lessons to children wishing to learn the flute, recorder, piano, clarinet or singing.  These start at £3.50 per week for group lessons and children will learn to read music in a fun environment.

I am also willing to run recorder clubs, orchestras, choirs, lead singing assemblies and prepare children for school performances.  My time at your school can be flexible and I will invoice at the end of each half term, so extra time can be added when a music event is on the horizon.

The recent Henley Review praised the role of music in education and contained a total of 36 recommendations to promote music education in England.  Recommendations included making music education a statutory requirement for local authorities, expanding Ofsted’s remit to include music education, providing teachers with more training resources, and promoting music as a subject and career path.

It is important to realise that teaching music is outside the realm of many teacher’s comfort zones and that it is a difficult subject to teach if you are not comfortable singing or performing rhythms in a classroom setting.

This package has been implemented in Foston Primary school for the last two years, and the Parents and Friends Association has continued to fund it, appreciating the contribution it makes to the school.  The individual lessons are also very popular with the children – a quarter of the total number of children are now learning an instrument.  I also teach whole class music to nursery, reception and key stage 1 pupils at Tregelles (The Mount junior school).
